چکیده

This paper presents a numerical comparison of two regularizations of the Euler equations, namely, the vortex blob regularization and regularization by physical viscosity. The initial condition is a flat vortex sheet whose vorticity has been smoothed by convolution. The sheet rolls up into a vortex pair. We compute the frequency of oscillations in the core vorticity and scale it using results for a semi-infinite vortex sheet. The computations indicate that as the smoothing parameter δ and the viscosity ν decrease, the scaled frequency in the vortex blob solutions differs from the one in the Navier–Stokes solutions.

Vortex Sheet Roll-up Due to the Motion of a Flat Plate

The vortex-blob method is extended to compute vortex sheet separation at a sharp edge. A smoothing parameter con trols the amount of detail occuring in the rolled-up spiral. Cal culations are presented for the case of vortex sheet roll-up due to an impulsively started flat plate.

Parameter-free symmetry-preserving regularization modelling of turbulent natural convection flows

Since direct numerical simulations of natural convection flows cannot be performed at high Ra-numbers, a dynamically less complex mathematical formulation is sought. In the quest for such a formulation, we consider regularizations (smooth approximations) of the nonlinearity. The regularization method basically alters the convective terms to reduce the production of small scales of motion by mea...

A Localized Approximation Method for Vortical Flows

An approximation method of Moore for Kelvin-Helmholtz instability is formulated as a general method for two-dimensional, incompressible, inviscid flows generated by a vortex sheet. In this method the nonlocal equations describing evolution of the sheet are approximated by a system of (local) differential equations. These equations are useful for predicting singularity formation on the sheet and...

A Particle Method and Adaptive Treecodefor Vortex Sheet Motion inThree-Dimensional Flow

A particle method is presented for computing vortex sheet motion in three-dimensional flow. The particles representing the sheet are advected by a regularized Biot– Savart integral in which the exact singular kernel is replaced by the Rosenhead– Moore kernel. New particles are inserted to maintain resolution as the sheet rolls up. The particle velocities are evaluated by an adaptive treecode al...

Evolution of a Cylindrical and a Spherical Vortex Sheet

Point vortex and vortex blob computations are used to investigate the evolution of the planar and the axisymmetric vortex sheet which initially induce ow past a cylinder and past a sphere respectively. In both cases the sheet develops a singularity at two points in the symmetry plane at a nite time. It rolls up at these points forming a vortex pair in the planar case and a vortex ring in the ax...
